UMAG

Why Umag?

UMAG

Why Umag?

Umag is a well-known tourist resort center, most oriented to sports and recreational tourism, offering enviable accommodation capacity. It has been hosting the prestigious ATP Croatia Open tournament for more than twenty years, featuring numerous names of world tennis such as Carlos Moye, Goran Ivanišević, Novak Đoković and others.
Umag and its surroundings are created for vacation and recreation. In addition to tennis, swimming, diving, water skiing, sailing, fishing, hiking and cycling are also being developed.

Umag also has an enchanting cultural heritage that can be seen in the City Museum or in the streets of the old town, which has preserved a network of narrow alleys and medieval urban structure. The old town is located on a peninsula that was once separated from the mainland. It was surrounded by defense walls built in the 10th century, which are now partially preserved next to the City Museum building, located in one of the tower. The remains of the city gate that had a moving bridge are visible on Garibaldi Street. In the narrow streets there are houses in Gothic and Renaissance style with coats of arms, and a particularly interesting house on Epifino Street in front of which was built an early Christian sarcophagus from the 5th century. Parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Peregrina was built in 1757 on the site of an older church that was previously ruined in the storm. The facade is made in the style of later baroque and the belfry is 33 meters high. In the church there are orgies from 1776, from which every year at the end of August they hear the beautiful sounds of the competition and the festival “Organum Histriae”, with the aim of restoring the organ and promoting the organist music.

It is worth to visit the area as well, because there are excellent wineries, country farms, walking and cycling trails, and various manifestations.
